A strange feature of COVID-19

by admin

Hi All

Hope everyone is staying safe and well and managing to cope in the current crisis.  I don’t know if you have heard but losing the sense of smell/taste appears to be a strange feature of COVID-19.  I use the word feature as it is being reported as both a symptom in mild cases (often the only symptom) and a consequence of more severe cases.

Post virally, this would be expected – about 12% of people who have lost their sense of smell lose it as a result of a cold type virus which is what this is – its called Post Viral Olfactory Loss (PVOL).

As a symptom, its more unusual and the challenge for scientists and clinicians researching this is the lack of testing available.

Fifth Sense is involved in the Global Consortium of Chemosensory Research – a collaboration of over 600 researchers across the world rapidly working on establishing evidence about this virus.

We are keeping our website homepage up to date with the latest information regarding COVID-19 and smell loss and what to do if you suspect you have been affected by it in this way.
